Often commissions in the arts require a counter proposal. The artists receive an offer and are expected to respond with something corresponding to the circumstances. This project allowed for a different trajectory. Instead of the conventional reacting to Mårten Spångberg decided on an active method letting the project’s brief reverberate through his contribution’s layers circumventing the temptation to understand, locate, pinpoint and value the outcome. The different layers of Spångberg’s contribution can be understood as forms of machines whose task was to generate indetermination, diffusion even hallucinations regarding art and technology, thus, if lucky, producing material that as much as being tangible was somewhat ungraspable. Instead of reacting to existing knowledge the project’s desire was to produce knowledge, and sensation in ways where the outcome couldn’t be predicted or did not stand in probabilistic relation to the point of the departure.
One part of the project consists of twelve reflective texts written over the course of the project, responding to research into technology, internet phenomena, blockchain, algorithms, machine learning etc. but without necessarily being “about” anything related, except art, aesthetics and the planet we inhabit.
