William Lau Peking Opera
TICKETS COMING SOON
Crimson Coast Dance is excited to present this established Chinese dance artist.
William will come to Nanaimo in April and offer workshops that demystify Opera, giving everyone a chance to become a Chinese Opera Star!
He offers a performance with mixed styles and stories in the first part of the show, and a Peking Opera, The Jade Bracelet to close the evening.
In Chinese tradition, babies are given jade to wear as a guardian—a promise of protection. As the child grows, these bracelets become physical links to family and tradition.
William Lau is a Canadian-based opera artist specializing in Peking opera, particularly in the traditional Nan Dan (male playing female) role. He is also the founder of the Little Pear Garden Collective, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Chinese performing arts in Canada. Lau has performed internationally and is known for blending traditional Peking opera with other disciplines and languages. Lau is a professional performer with a background in both Chinese traditional dance and Western classical ballet, and has an MFA from York University. He is especially skilled in the Nan Dan role, portraying female characters in Peking opera, and has performed nationally and internationally. William is the Artistic Director for the Montreal Society of Chinese Performing Arts and the Autumn Melody Collective, mentoring new artists and developing performances that include both traditional and modern elements, sometimes incorporating English and other languages. He pushes the boundaries of his traditional art form by collaborating with artists from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds.
