Contemporary Dance Rooted in Maasai Dance and Music Traditions
by Fernando Anuang’a, Kenya

Imagine a book opening on the Savannah where the text is the song, the image is the dance.
Traditional Maasai Dance meets Contemporary in this story based on the land that raises us.

The Artist Speaks through his articulate body. Kenyan born, Maasai artist, Fernando Anuang’a, arrives in Nanaimo to share his work and stories.

Anuang’a, an atypical dancer, an autodidact, is supported and inspired by the Maasai songs, ancestral memory, and vocal rhythmic power in his gestural vocabulary and his stark, stunning physical storytelling. His work explores the question of how to evolve Tradition towards Modernity without obliterating one’s tracks, without betraying one’s roots. His work calls on the collective memory, the oral memory. Traditional Future is loyal to the moran, the young warrior, and to the village land, as symbolic roots.

The evening features a dance film, produced by fashion designer, Pierre Cardin, revealing the artistic approach to evolving the work, Traditional Future.

An Audience to Artist Talk Back completes the evening.
